India's power fleet is now 54 percent non-fossil, five years ahead of its Paris pledge

India promised the world that about half its power-generating fleet would be non-fossil by 2030. It passed that mark in June 2025 and now stands at 54.18 percent. Where the electricity actually comes from is a slower story.

On the last day of June 2026, every power station, wind farm, solar park and dam in India added up to 548,858 megawatts of installed capacity, the maximum the whole fleet could deliver if everything ran flat out at once. Of that, 297,369 megawatts, or 54.18 percent, came from sources that are not coal, oil or gas: solar, wind, hydropower, nuclear and biomass. India had promised the world about 50 percent by 2030. It got there in June 2025, five years early, and has kept climbing since.

How we know

The count comes from the Central Electricity Authority, the technical arm of India's power ministry, which publishes the country's installed capacity every month. Its report for 30 June 2026 puts coal at 224,158 megawatts, still the largest single block at 40.84 percent, and solar second at 162,152 megawatts, or 29.54 percent. Wind adds 57,443 megawatts, hydropower 52,065 and nuclear 8,780. The promise is public and specific: India's updated pledge under the Paris Agreement, lodged with the United Nations in 2022, commits it to "about 50 percent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources" by 2030. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy recorded the crossing in June 2025, and by November 2025 the non-fossil share stood at 51.55 percent of a 509.64 gigawatt fleet. Solar has done most of the lifting, reaching 132.85 gigawatts that month, up from 94.17 a year before.

Why it matters

A fleet is not the same as the electricity it sends out. A solar park produces nothing at night and a turbine nothing in a calm, so each megawatt of solar or wind delivers far fewer hours of electricity across a year than a megawatt of coal. Engineers call that ratio the capacity factor, the share of the year a plant spends actually generating, and it is why a fleet that is 54 percent non-fossil produces nothing like 54 percent non-fossil power. Ember, the energy think tank, puts fossil fuels at 73 percent of India's electricity in 2025 against 27 percent from clean sources, with solar alone at 9.4 percent. The distance between 54 percent of the fleet and 27 percent of the power is the distance still to travel, and raising the capacity factor of what is already standing is the harder half of the job. Something did shift, though. In 2024, coal met 61 percent of the growth in India's electricity demand; in 2025, a low-demand year, clean sources met all of it and coal generation fell by 2.9 percent. India became the world's fourth largest generator of clean electricity that year, passing France and Canada. Whether that holds when demand climbs again is the open question, and it is the one the next 500 gigawatts are being built to answer.

What is not solved yet

Building generators is not the same as generating electricity, and this is a milestone in the first, not the second. Fossil fuels still produced 73 percent of India's power in 2025, against 27 percent from clean sources, because solar and wind run for far fewer hours of the year than a coal plant does. India remains the world's second largest coal producer, and its coal ministry plans to raise output further. Ember's assessment of current plans puts renewables at 42 percent of generation by 2030, well short of their share of the fleet, and its India analysts name transmission and grid flexibility, not more panels, as the next constraint. A target counted in megawatts says nothing on its own about the wires and storage needed to use them.
