A hospital can have a treatment and still be unable to reach the problem. For the central blindness caused by geographic atrophy, the advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration, there has been almost nothing to offer. How we know
The device, called PRIMA, is a photovoltaic implant paired with camera glasses. Thirty-eight people were implanted; of the thirty-two assessed at twelve months, most could read again, gaining an average of about 25 letters on a standard eye chart, roughly five lines, from a baseline of no letters read at all. A chip smaller than a grain of rice sits under the retina and turns light from the glasses into electrical signals the eye's nerve cells carry to the brain, substituting for the lost light-sensing cells. The surgery carries real risk: 26 serious adverse events occurred across 19 patients, all tied to the procedure, with most resolving within two months.
Why it matters
The restraint the trial insists on is important. This restores prosthetic central vision only, for people who have already lost it to geographic atrophy while keeping their peripheral sight, and the restored image is monochromatic and low-resolution, delivered through glasses that take training to use. So this is not a cure for blindness in general, and regulatory approval and routine use are still ahead. It is something narrower and still remarkable: people who had lost the middle of their sight, reading words on a page again.

What did the trial actually show?
